The Importance of Animals in a Changing World
Animals, ecosystems and humanity – interconnected futures
The Organising Committee of the World Conference on Animal Production 2028 (WCAP 2028) invites Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for papers to be presented and published as part of WCAP 2028.
WCAP 2028 will bring together the global animal production community to explore the critical role of animals in addressing the environmental, social and economic challenges facing a rapidly changing world. The conference will showcase innovative research, practical solutions and collaborative approaches that support sustainable, resilient and productive animal systems.
As part of the EOI process, authors will be invited to nominate their preferred publication stream and presentation format.
Publication Streams
WCAP 2028 will offer two publication pathways, enabling authors to select the publication format most appropriate for their work.
Animal Production Science Special Collection
Authors may nominate for publication in a special WCAP 2028 collection of Animal Production Science, a leading international peer-reviewed journal. Full manuscripts submitted through this pathway will undergo the journal's standard editorial and peer-review processes. Authors accepted into this stream will be invited to prepare and submit a full journal paper in accordance with the journal's author guidelines.
Animal Science in Australia Proceedings
Authors may alternatively nominate for publication in Animal Science in Australia, the proceedings of the Australian Association of Animal Sciences (AAAS). This publication pathway consists of concise, one-page paper. The Animal Science in Australia proceedings will be published on the AAAS website as a single combined proceedings publication. The proceedings will be published alongside the WCAP 2028 special collection of Animal Production Science papers.
Important information for prospective authors
The current WCAP 2028 Expression of Interest (EOI) process is primarily intended for authors seeking publication in the special WCAP 2028 collection of Animal Production Science (APS).
Authors who wish to present at WCAP 2028 but do not intend to submit a full APS manuscript will have an alternative opportunity to contribute a one-page paper to be published in Animal Science in Australia (ASA), through a second EOI process, planned for mid-2027.
Researchers, students, industry professionals and practitioners considering the one-page ASA pathway are encouraged to register for WCAP 2028 conference updates to receive information on the ASA EOI process, submission requirements and key deadlines as soon as they are announced.
Conference Themes
WCAP 2028 welcomes submissions across six conference themes that explore the role of animals in addressing the environmental, social and economic challenges facing a changing world. Authors will be asked to nominate the theme that best aligns with their proposed paper. Submissions that span multiple themes are encouraged. Additional information and guiding questions for each theme are available on the WCAP 2028 website.
The Importance of Animals in a Changing World
Animals, ecosystems and humanity – interconnected futuresThis theme explores the central role of animals within interconnected global systems, including environmental sustainability, human wellbeing and economic resilience. Topics may include ecosystem services, climate adaptation and mitigation, One Health and One Welfare approaches, livelihoods, and circular and regenerative production systems.
Integrating the End User
Uniting science and industry for a sustainable futureThis theme focuses on the translation of research into practice through collaboration with producers, industry, advisors and communities. Relevant topics include extension and adoption science, co-design approaches, decision-support technologies, and industry–research partnerships.
Social Aspects
Championing diversity, welfare and ethics in animal productionThis theme considers the social dimensions of animal production, including animal welfare, ethics, social licence, workforce capability, diversity and inclusion, consumer trust, and effective communication with the broader community.
Digital Transformation & Omics
Digital technologies and omics driving sustainable animal futuresThis theme highlights advances in digital agriculture and biological sciences, including precision livestock farming, artificial intelligence, sensor technologies, data analytics, genomics and other omics technologies that are transforming animal production systems.
Conservation of the Natural World
Balancing productivity, climate and ecological changeThis theme explores pathways to align animal production with environmental stewardship through low-emissions systems, biodiversity conservation, soil health, carbon sequestration, climate adaptation and sustainable resource management.
Food & Fibre Security
Science and innovation for global animal productionThis theme addresses the challenge of sustainably producing high-quality animal-based food and fibre for a growing global population. Topics include productivity, genetics, nutrition, animal health, biosecurity, resilient supply chains and future food systems.
Expression of Interest (EOI) Process
Submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) is the first step for all authors wishing to present and publish their work at WCAP 2028.
The EOI process enables the Scientific and Editorial Committees to plan the conference program and allocate submissions to the appropriate publication stream.
